How to Connect the Top of Durian Bawor

Grafting is a method of artificial vegetative propagation that has long been known and used by the wider community to improve plant properties, both quality and quantity related.

In principle, grafting is the joining of two living plant parts in such a way that they can be joined to form one complete plant which has the characteristics of a combination of the two organs or tissues that are combined.

The two parts of the plant that are held together are generally rootstock and scion.

This shoot connection is usually used to improve the quality of durian seeds planted from the seeds, where if the durian seeds from the seeds are planted without any treatment such as grafting, for example, then the fruiting time is long enough, the tree will grow tall and often deviate from the parent plant.  Meanwhile, durian seedlings that are treated such as grafting, can bear fruit more quickly, the tree's posture is shorter and the quality can be determined by selecting superior plant seedlings.

To find out the full explanation, please refer to the following steps for How to Connect the Bawor Durian Top.

In making Bawor durian seedlings through grafting, there are two important parts that must be ready at the same time, the first part is the rootstock which is responsible for the root system and the second is the upper stem which is obtained from the parent tree and then connected to the rootstock.

 # PREPARATION OF TOOLS AND MATERIALS

 1. Grafting knife, cutter, or any knife provided it is sharp and sterile
 2. PE 02 plastic or popsicle plastic to tie the connection
 3. Rootstock and scion

 # DOWN STEM PREPARATION

The rootstock used for grafting is the Bawor durian plant seeds that come from seedbeds that are approximately 6 months old, or the stem diameter is as big as a pencil, the seeds are usually planted in polybags.  Choose seeds that are healthy, have good growth, stems upright and sturdy.

Or if the seedlings are still small, grafting can be done on the stump, as we all know that durian seeds usually have the base of the stem that is larger in size.

 # PREPARATION OF THE RODS / ENTRES

The mother tree to be harvested for fresh fruit must come from superior varieties, high productivity, healthy and free from pests and diseases.

Take the scion from the mother tree of Bawor durian in the form of a branch that is not growing (no young leaves / dormant branches), buds have started to appear which will become new shoots, cut the scion from the parent tree.

Try to keep the diameter of the scion sticks approximately the same as the diameter of the rootstock where the grafting will be made.

Trim all the leaves to prevent high evaporation.  When trimming the leaves, be careful not to hit the buds, because the buds are in the axillary.

 # CONNECTION / GRAFTING STAGE

 1. Cut the rootstock at the part of the stem that is not too young and not too old, usually marked with a greenish brown stem color or about 20 cm from the base of the stem.  If the rootstock is still small, the grafting is done at the base of the stem which is usually larger in size.
 2. Cut the lower stem about 2-2.5 cm using a knife, cutter or razor blade right in the middle so that both sides are the same.
 3. The entry that is ready to be connected is then slashed on the right and left to form a point like a wedge or letter V, try to cut it once, don't repeat it.  The scion is about 10-15 cm long and has at least 2 buds.
 4. Insert in the lower part of the stem, try to make the size of the top and bottom stems more or less the same, also try to make the connection as tight as possible and there are no cavities.
 5. Then tie the connection, if you use ice plastic to tie it, it is pulled first so that it is lengthwise then split using a cutter / knife.  Tie the connection using the PE plastic or ice plastic.
 6. Use a transparent plastic cover to cover the connection, tie the bottom of the lid, but provide a hole for air circulation.
 7. If the rootstock is planted in a polybag, place it in the shade that is not exposed to direct sunlight, either in the shade of a tree or a paranet, but don't put it in the house.

After about 1 month since grafting, usually new shoots appear on the grafted buds.  After the shoots grow well, they can be introduced to the morning sun, and can be placed in full sun after about 3 months of grafting.
