How to Graft Musang King Durian
Durian musang king or Durio Zibethinus L is a superior variety originating from Malaysia, previously known in Indonesia as durian turmeric, but over time Malaysia succeeded in developing it and cultivating this durian and eventually it became widely known as durian musang king.
Musang king durian fruit has a special feature, namely dry, yellow, soft and sweet taste, a combination of bitter, soft texture, strong aroma and small seeds, no wonder the Musang King durian is classified as the best type of dried fruit durian in its class.
In cultivating the durian civet king plant, the availability of seeds is a mandatory requirement. There are two types of durian seedlings, namely generative propagated seeds (from seeds) and vegetative propagated seeds, such as grafting, grafting, grafting and so on.
The seeds of the king civet durian planted directly from the seeds will take a long time to bear fruit, and although fruiting is not uncommon, the nature of the fruit deviates from the parent plant, besides that it also has a high plant posture.
Therefore, before the generative propagation of the durian civet king seeds is planted, it needs to be given special treatment, namely by grafting or sticking the buds of superior quality durian plants to improve the quality of the plant seeds.
Grafting or bud sticking is the joining of two living plant parts in such a way that they can combine into one complete plant which has the characteristics of a combination of the two organs or tissues that are combined. The two parts of the plant that are put together are the rootstock and the buds.
In making durian civet king seedlings through grafting, there are two important parts that must be ready at the same time, the first part is the rootstock which is responsible for the root system and the second is the bud that is obtained from the mother tree and then attached to the rootstock .
To find out a full explanation, please refer to the explanation of the following stages of the Musang King Durian Grafting Method:
* PREPARATION OF DOWN RODS
The rootstock used for grafting are durian plant seeds that come from seedbeds whose stem diameter is the size of a pencil. Seedlings for rootstocks can be obtained from seed nurseries planted in polybags.
* SPOT EYE PREPARATION
The parent tree for which the shoots are taken must come from a superior variety of superior civet durian, productive, healthy and free from pests and diseases. Choose a branch that has started to appear buds that usually grow in the axilla of the leaves.
Because the buds are used, the propagation of plants using this grafting method saves more in using scion.
* TOOLS REQUIRED
1. The most important grafting knife or cutter is sharp and sterile.
2. PE 02 plastic, grafting tape, or you can also use plastic popsicles
* PASTING STAGE
Prepare the buds / stems that will be taken from the shoots, the buds are usually in the axillary of the leaves, trim the leaves but leave a little of the leaf stems to protect the shoots so that later when they are tied the shoots do not become bruised, let alone break.
Cut / peel the bark of the rootstock 2-3 cm long, just cut or peel the skin off, not to hit the wood, at a height of 20 cm from the base of the stem, cut the incision skin but leave a small incision skin which functions to close the patch later.
Take the bud by making an incision around the bud, taking the bud eye and the bark around the bud. Do not touch the inside of the bud eye.
Attach the buds to the rootstock that had been sliced beforehand, try to do the attachment process quickly before the buds dry.
Tie the buds using PE plastic or grafting tape or you can also use ice-wax plastic, the binding is done from the bottom up until it is tightly closed, tie the top so that when it rains water does not enter.
Place the seeds in the shade, pay attention to the humidity of the planting medium, if dry, immediately flush sufficiently.
After 1 month of grafting, if the patch is successful, the buds will look green and if they fail, they will usually look black. If the patch looks successful, trim the stem above the bud eye patch, about 15-20 cm from the bud, also trim the branching below the cut, the goal is to accelerate the growth of the bud attachment.
